Newborn and sibling photos are some of my favorites photos! It really is your whole heart in one picture. Sibling photos can be tricky, but they are always worth it! In this post I will share some tips and tricks on what I do that helps to get the best sibling photo that we can get.
Before the Session
Preparing your older kids is key in getting a great sibling picture with your newborn. Let them practice holding your newborn baby at home (supervised of course!). If they aren’t comfortable holding your newborn then they will look very nervous or even be scared to hold them for a picture. Let them know a few days before pictures that they will be coming to the newborn session and they will get to hold their newborn brother or sister! They will get to hold, kiss, and love on their baby. It is such a sweet time, and the more positive you talk to your children about pictures, the more excited they will be!
During the Session
At the session I typically will take pictures of just the older siblings by themselves. I feel like it is a great way to get them comfortable with me, the environment, and the camera. I also do this because I feel like it gives them a few minutes to shine on their own. Their lives have dramatically changed in the last few weeks. Sometimes it is fun for them to have a few moments that are just about them. 😉
I do the sibling photos at the very beginning of my newborn sessions. Once the older kids do their jobs, they are free to go into the sitting room and play with toys or watch television. I have also had clients take the older kids out to brunch while mom and baby stay for the rest of the session. At the end of the session, I have a special treat for all of my older kids for doing such a great job! I want them to have a positive experience!
This session of Molly and her sisters is a great example of newborn and sibling photos. Carly who is wearing green is almost 2. Her mom did a great job preparing her for her session. Carly came in and was a little nervous. I was able to take a few pictures of her and then she watched her older sister, Jane, take pictures with their newborn sister Molly. Once she saw how easy it was she was ready for her turn! We were able to get some really darling photos that they will cherish forever.
